A guide for our guests

Gravel routes

Gravel in Masuria (the Masurian Lake District) is a different league. Crushed-stone tracks between lakes, forest lanes scented with resin, long climbs rewarded with a descent right down to the water — and almost no cars. You set off straight from the house, and after a few kilometres only the hum of tyres on gravel remains. Below you will find my collection of tried-and-tested directions: open a route, study its elevation profile and load it onto your phone.

Before you set off

Carpe Diem sits literally on the Masurian Cycling Loop, so you set off straight from the doorstep. From here you can just as easily settle into a steady tarmac rhythm as drop onto the side gravel tracks you will not find in any guidebook.

By the house you will find a bike rack and a pump — and after a muddy loop you can rinse the frame down with the garden hose and come back to the terrace with a clear conscience.

Looking for something matched to your form, your time and the weather? Write or call. I have my own loops, ridden many times over — from quiet “coffee” spins to heavier days in the saddle that are not yet in the collection.
